McKenzie County is the perfect destination from which to launch your vacation experience. Whether it’s the rugged adventure of exploring a backcountry trail, a quest for the longest golf drive, or discovering the rich culture and history of this region, the possibilities are as endless as our night skies!
Once nicknamed the Island Empire, McKenzie County is bordered by Lake Sakakawea, the Little Missouri River and the Yellowstone River. The county includes the beautiful Theodore Roosevelt Park, the Little Missouri National Grasslands, the Maah Daah Hey Trail and the ever changing Badlands. Within a 60 mile radius of Watford City visitors can experience trail riding, cycling, canoeing, fishing, or hunting. Wildlife viewing, photography and camping opportunities abound as well as educational tours on historical, cultural and natural resources preservation. Legendary hospitality flourishes through the amenities in the gateway communities of Watford City, Alexander and Grassy Butte.
The Long X Trading Post Visitor Center and Museum is the central location for information on the area’s cultural, geological, historical, geographic attractions and general tourist assistance. Also, within the walls of the Long X Trading Post is the largest petrified tree stump ever found in North Dakota(60 million years old, 25,000 pounds, six feet in diameter and 8 feet tall)! The Pioneer Museum packs a whole lot of history and depicts a large part of Watford City and McKenzie County.
